Sea Glass Candy | A Wedding Project

This wedding project post is geared to anyone having a beach wedding! Ever since I was a little girl, my family  took our summer vacations to my grandparents house in the Outer Banks. My Nanny and Pop started collecting beach glass for as long as I could remember. They would walk the beaches for hours searching for it. It was always the running joke that each family that vacationed there had to collect beach glass and leave it on the counter to pay for the weeks stay.  Now, 20 plus years later, there are jars and jars of beach glass at the house.  So, this post is dedicated to making edible sea glass! It’s very easy and very inexpensive! What a perfect favor for anyone planning beach nuptials!

Here’s what you need:
2 cups granulated sugar
3/4 cup water
3/4 cup light corn syrup
1/4 – 1 tsp. flavoring oil (I used root beer which altered my color)
Food coloring
Powdered sugar (to coat cooled candy)
Candy thermometer
Non-stick sauce pan
Greased 9 x 13 pan
Brush (for coating candy)
Mallet (for breaking candy)

Combine the sugar, water and corn syrup together. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.

Cook over medium heat. No need to stir. This will take sometime. Once it hits 250°F, add the coloring. Again, no need to stir, the boiling will take care of the mixing. Once the mixture hits 300°F, add the flavoring. I read online this could cause splashing so please be careful (it didn’t happen to me… but it’s definitely possible). After the flavor is mixed (again, don’t stir), the candy is ready to pour.

At 300°F the candy is ready. I would suggest spraying the pan with non-stick spray. The wax paper gave me some trouble.. I don’t recommend it. Let it cool completely. It can take up to 45 minutes. You can speed up the process by placing it in the refrigerator (be careful… the pan will be hot!)

Now the fun part! Cover the candy with a towel or a piece of wax paper. Tap the candy with a mallet. I only had a rolling pin… but it works just the same. Don’t get TOO crazy… you don’t want the candy to be too fine or turn into powder.

Once the candy is broken apart, dust it with powdered sugar for a real sea glass look.

That’s it! Looks just like sea glass and tastes amazing! A great favor for your guests to take away with them!
